The days of education in Early America are filled with memories of one-room schools, chalkboards, recess, goose quill pens, ABC hornbooks, battledores, McGuffey readers and other educational books and materials. In colonial America, for example, there were many free schools. Children attended class 6 days a week for three months a year. There was ony one teacher per schoolhouse. Students were taught in groups and would 'learn their lessons' while the other students did their schoolwork or played at recess.
