During the 19th century, wealthy men and women

generally had more leisure time than did people

of previous generations.

This led to the creation and perfection of a variety

of indoor play-time games, otherwise known as parlour

games . In a formal setting, gentlemen, ladies and children

could amuse themselves at small parties or gatherings.

Many of these games such as Cat's Cradle and

Jackstraws 'Pick-Up Sticks' derived from the amusements

of New World colonists.
